Hand Transplant Recipient Wiggles Finger

For Immediate Release: 1/26/1999

(Louisville, Kentucky) - Hand transplant patient Matt Scott, 37, is in good spirits after undergoing hand transplant surgery at Jewish Hospital on Sunday, January 24. The surgery was performed by University of Louisville and Kleinert, Kutz and Associates surgeons in a 14 ┬Ż hour procedure. "Matt did move a finger today. We are very cautious and not encouraging movement at this point. Controlled motion of the fingers will begin sometime in the next few days to one week. When we start depends on how the wounds are healing," explained Warren Breidenbach, lead surgeon for the hand transplant team. Today, 36 hours post-transplant, Matt's activities included sitting in a chair, taking a walk, eating meals and getting his hair washed. He is visiting with his wife, mother and sister and has talked with his children on the telephone. Additional updates will be provided periodically.
