Hand Transplant Recipient Speaks to Spalding University Students on National Organ Donor Day

For Immediate Release: 2/13/2013

Donnie Rickelman, the Linton, Indiana man who became the seventh hand transplant recipient at Jewish Hospital in July 2011, will share his story with students from Spalding University in honor of National Organ Donation Day.

Rickelman will be joined by Michael Marvin, M.D., Jewish Hospital director of Transplantation and University of Louisville professor of Surgery.  Dr. Marvin oversees immunosuppressive therapy for Donnie and other hand transplant recipients and monitors for signs of rejection and adverse reaction to medications.

Rickelman injured both hands in a factory accident on March 9, 1998 when they were caught in a steel splitter machine. His right dominant hand was crushed and left hand partially amputated below the wrist.

Rickelman’s 14 ½ hour innovative procedure was performed at Jewish Hospital, part of KentuckyOne Health, by surgeons from Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center and Christine M. Kleinert Institute for Hand and Microsurgery.  The transplant was part of the Louisville Vascularized Composite Allograft program (Louisville VCA Program).
