Jewish Hospital/Kleinert Kutz representatives to discuss the future of the Louisville hand transplant program

Who: Jewish Hospital and Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center representatives will hold a news briefing to discuss the future of the Louisville hand transplant program with the departure of Warren Breidenbach, M.D., from Louisville, Kentucky.

 
What: The Composite Tissue Allotransplantation (hand transplant) program is a partnership of physicians and researchers at Jewish Hospital, Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center and the University of Louisville. The group developed the pioneering hand transplant procedure. The partnership held the world’s first international symposium on hand transplant in September 1997. Warren C. Breidenbach, M.D., and a team of surgeons from Kleinert Kutz and the University of Louisville have performed seven hand transplants on six patients to date at Jewish Hospital. They performed the world’s most successful in January, 1999.

About the Program:
The Composite Tissue Allotransplantation program is a partnership of physicians and researchers at Jewish Hospital Hand Care Center, Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center, and the University of Louisville. The group developed the pioneering hand transplant procedure and has performed seven hand transplants on six patients since 1999.  Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates coordinated the hand donation for the team’s hand transplant procedures.
The hand transplant is sponsored by the Department of Defense, Office of Naval Research and Office of Army Research to further research in the composite tissue allotransplantation program.
